“Behind every inequality stat is a human being who lived a harder life and died a death too soon.

The evidence in the latest Well-being of Wales Report shows growing intergenerational unfairness, with too many children and young people in poverty, poorer well-being and worsening mental health.

Healthy life expectancy has now decreased for the fourth period in a row to mean the average Welsh person won’t even reach their 60th birthday in good health.

The report reinforces the message of my Future Generations Report: we face an unrecognisable future without urgent action on poverty including a Real Living Wage, fairer access to food and a serious switch to preventative health spending.

We have to better use the Well-being of Future Generations Act to change the future of Wales so all people are given equal chances and access to what keeps them well, rather than accepting that many people will battle every day for the basics.

The failure to tackle child poverty in Wales and the inequalities which deepen each year is a structural failure of action which must be owned by all politicians.”

Derek Walker, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales
