Introduction

Sharing Lessons and Inspiring Action: Advancing Future Generations Governance Globally

The Well-being of Future Generations Act (WFGA) seeks to transform the way public bodies in Wales are improving our social, cultural, environmental and economic well-being. The work we do in Wales continues to inspire organisations and governments globally; while simultaneously exploring opportunities to gather international good practice that can support public bodies to better implement the WFGA.

Through the Well-being of Future Generations Act, Wales aims to be a Globally Responsible Nation. The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner’s (FGC) international programme aims to:

  • Support public bodies across Wales, including young people in Wales from our Future Generations Leadership Academy, to collaborate with other countries to learn about shared challenges and opportunities in implementing well-being and sustainable development policies – bringing knowledge and good practice learning home to Wales.
  • Promote Wales’ future generations approach and progress to global institutions and other governments while also drawing on their insights and international experience.

Wales' Commitment

Wales’ commitment to the well-being of future generations takes inspiration from indigenous wisdom and the Seventh Generation Principle.

Wales has always been ready to support global movements and has a proud history of learning and sharing our values with the world. From the Wales Women’s Peace petition of 1924 to the annual Urdd Peace and Goodwill Message to influencing the adoption of the UN Declaration for Future Generations – Wales is working across the world to exchange ideas and policies around implementing future generations governance. Wales’ efforts have inspired many countries and global institutions including the United Nations’ Summit of the Future in 2024 and the proposed creation of a UN Special Envoy for Future Generations.
