Simple Changes #22

Provide mental health and suicide awareness training for all staff

1

Problem

The Health and Safety Executive estimates 49% of sick days are down to stress, anxiety or depression. A recent Mind survey showed that one in five people felt they couldn’t tell their boss if they were overly stressed at work and less than half of people diagnoses with a mental health problem had told their manager.

Simple Change

It is crucial that staff can spot poor mental health and suicidal behaviour, in themselves as well as others, and feel empowered to take positive action. This could mean raising a concern with a member of HR, arranging a visit with their GP, or being able to signpost people to relevant agencies for advice and support.
