Simple Changes #31

Make public information accessible through a variety of formats

1

Problem

PROBLEM: Many people with sensory loss, or experiencing other barriers to communication, are less able to understand ‘traditional’ information about public services, fill in forms or know how to take prescribed medication. This can leave people feeling confused, disempowered or like ‘less of a person’.

Simple Change

Making your public information accessible through a variety of formats, such as braille, British Sign Language, translation into community languages and jargon-free text, helps to ensure that a wide range of people can access relevant information and engage effectively with their services. The cost and time implications of this should be factored into your work at an early stage, so it is not seen as an additional extra.
